The Honor of All Honors

May 14, 2009

For some reason, probably fear of stalkers and candy swipers, it's all the rage to give every member of your family an alias on your blog.

Take the world famous CJane for example, she calls her husband Chup and her baby The Chief. Or Mrs. Furious--she likes to refer to her girls as Kid and Baby. And then, of course, there's me, Barbara Bettencourt Levinski. I pulled that whole Amy Lawson thing clear out of the sky, and I've got to say, for some strange reason, it just works.

More importantly, my husband LeBron and my son Amir-Rasheed feel far more secure when their legal names are kept under wraps. That's why I've been leaning on the 'Jared and James' thing for all these years--good old fashioned identity protection, that's what it really comes down to.

Welp, now that we have a little bun in the oven, the 'Lawsons' have one more thing to think about: What in the world will we name this child in real life? And more importantly, what will we call this child in blogland?

That my friends, is where you come in. Yes, you.

For the next seven days (so until Wednesday, May 20th at midnight), you will have the opportunity...no, the privilege...no, the HONOR of suggesting a blog name for this little muffin.

Here's how it will work:

1) Leave a comment on this post suggesting a boy name, a girl name, or both. Just be sure to designate which one it is.

2) On Thursday morning, after we find out if the baby's actually a boy or a girl, a fine panel of distinguished judges will select their favorite name alias suggestions.

3) We'll bring it to a 48-hour reader vote.

Now get your thinking caps on! Won't this be fun?

Suggestions go in the comment section...

  1. Before you get too far into this babynaming thing you have to check out two websites:
The first is the Social Security administration. They have the top 1000 baby names in the country for the past hundred or so years. They also break it down into the top 100 names per state (Utah always has some funny ones).
    http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

Also check out http://www.babynamewizard.com/ It's THE most phenomenal baby name resource EVER.

I love baby names. It's pretty much my favorite thing to talk about.

    OK, now for my votes:

girl: Susannah (totally uncommon, but everyone knows it and likes it. The perfect name.) Plus you could call her Baby Susie which is too cute. Second choice: Ivy or Lydia. Those would go well with James.

boy: I don't care as long as it's not two syllables ending with -en or -son.
(I would suggest Felix but that's the name I'm saving for when my husband dies and I get remarried and have a baby with my new husband.)

  2. Dad is putting in his entrie: Fritz for a boy. I looked at him and said "Say what ?" and he siad yes, Fritz Lawson. And Jane for a girl.

  3. I know it doesn't really "go" with the "J" theme you have going for the boys, but I really like "Tad" for a boy. Or you could stick with the "J" and call him Jack. Girls, hmmm, I actually can't see you with a little girl... of course I said the same thing about myself. My daughter didn't listen. I actually wanted to call her "Ducky" as a nickname back before we solved the he/she debate, but somehow the mother in law won and we called her "Bubba" (Don't ask, I don't want to talk about it) Ducky is one of the dinosaurs from Land Before Time and I never knew if it was a boy or girl, so I thought that it was a great he-she name. SO I guess that would be my girl suggestion. :)

  4. I guess I meant Fritz Levinski:) and forgot the "s" on entries. (or "entrie" is the French spelling.) Oh brother spelled said wrong, too! geesh! I have to think about my entries and will get back to you.

  5. Girl- Alivyiah Trecole
    Boy-Tridger Kaegrin

    ReplyDelete
  6. Lol, I like "Fritz." It's kinda like "Spaz" only classier. And you, Amy Lawson, are nothing if not classy ;)

  7. Didn't you say once that you use family names? I don't know you're family. I'll have to take a flying leap and say...

Laurel for a girl. Luke for a boy. Maybe I like alliteration too much.

    ReplyDelete
  8. OK, seriously,
    Girl - Rosalie
    Boy - Easton

    ReplyDelete
  9. Boy- Amos or Ambrose
    Girl- Althea or Annette

    ReplyDelete
  10. Larry for a boy since I always call James that. (Larry Lawson or Levinski:) October for a girl and you could call her "10" for short. She'd always find her personalized items to decorate her locker, etc. at the house # section of the hardware store. and for twins: Peace and Quiet....because it would be fun to go around yelling that!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Maybe you can focus on the possible destruction this little one will bring to you life...

    Boy: Trigger
    Girl: Sassy

    ReplyDelete
  12. A blog name.. the wee Lawlet.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Bun - gender neutral
    Doozer - boy
    Don King - boy
    Sweetness - girl
    Light - girl

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think I can help. I am almost 37 wks pregnant myself with NO NAMES picked out.

I've notice the name alias thing too. Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  15. OK, I just read grandma's post...Peace and Quiet for twins. LOL. That is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  16. No first name suggestions but a good middle name.

My husband suggested Megatron Danger when I was pregnant with my son (And his cousin is planning on Optimus Prime for her kid). We replaced Megatron but kept the Danger. It works well for us.

  17. My favorite names are Aiden for a boy and Shelby for a girl. But I think Aiden has been the #1 boys name for like 8 years in a row or something so..

I also like Julie or Amber for a girl. You could keep with the J theme or make it more even with and A.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The best "play" names are Esmerelda and Shanequa (sp? "sha-knee-kwa")

    ReplyDelete
  19. Girl - Julia Goolia Lawson
Boy - Seven (like George from Seinfeld)

    Okay, seriously:

    Girl - Clara
    Boy - Henry

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like unique/old girl names and more common boy names. I just think girls can pull off cooler names than boys.

Since I don't know you personally, I will happily share my favorite girl names and you can steal them if you don't think they're weird.

I love Hattie. She was a character in a children's book I had when I was little.

Others: Stella, Jessa, Leila, Betsy, and Leigh

Boy names? Something simple and biblical like Sam or Isaac. My husband's name is Jonathan and it's unique in that everyone calls him "Jonathan" not "John."

Anyway, that was way more than one each but now you have more ideas, right?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, I'll put a vote in for my darling hubby. He was dead set on naming our last baby Sha-knee-kwa, too bad it was a boy. And definatly JR for a boy. (only you must always say it like a downeaster! Junn-ya) I'd say Eden for a girl and Jack for a boy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Girl - Annabelle
    Boy - Andrew

    ReplyDelete
  23. I vote for Cueball, especailly if the baby is bald at birth. I think it works for a boy or a girl but if it's not elegant enough for a girl (and I know that you are nothing if not elegant) then you could go with Indigo for a girl. You know, like that awful group that you like. You could even call her Indigo Girl.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I got all behind on my blog reading and then I came here and was all "WHAT BABY???" And now I'm just too tickled to think up names...

    hmmmmm...

Since you've done such a good job in disguising your family's names so far, you should stick with the same "theme" and go with

    John (BOY)

    or

    Jennifer (GIRL)

Those fake names would be perfect because they're so uncommon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. In an ode to The Office...Chevy or Ashtrid.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Double-you. then his/her first initial would be D but name would be "W". I have always wanted to do that. But if not we could always save that little gem for a dog or something.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Heber - boy
    Fornatus- boy

    Lavina- girl
    Mykynzy-girl

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Richard Simmons Lawson for a boy

Rachel Simone Lawson for a girl

Both are obviously reference to James and his wonderful hair.

PS I don't get the alias thing online either. I can barely keep my husband and kid's real name straight let alone start a new one.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Boy: Jack
    Girl: Jane

(you know, to go along with Jared and James)

And you should change your name to Jezebel while you're at it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I've been lurking around here for a few months since seeing your guest post on your sister's blog. Thank you so much for brightening my days. :)

My vote is Samuel and Sadie.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ruby for a girl. I don't know for a boy. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Levinski is a hard name to come up with... or are the children Bettencourt-Levinski?

I will offer up my all time favorite names.

    Girl - Lily

Boy - Patrick (no nicknames allowed. Can't use the name if he is going to be Pat or Rick. Uck.)

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's gender neutral, and absolutely sings forth from the mouth, "Dawson Lawson".

    ReplyDelete
  34. You could always do the TAMN thing and have a "Saje" Sarah/Alice/Jane/Emma for a girl blog code name;

For a boy, Derek/Adam/Mike/Nick. You could call him Damn. Damn baby. hee hee

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow, what an honor. I've only been following for like a week. Some Blogher link on another blog led me to you. Anywho, for names I would pick from a favorite song.

    Girl - Delilah
    Boy - Samson

    ReplyDelete
  36. Boy and I like "Jim Bob" or "Billy Bob"

    ReplyDelete
  37. A few thoughts:

My husband wanted to name our most recent child Jamie--he thought it was cool that it rhymed with Amy and obviously matched James.

My aunt names all her kids after her dead dogs. She said she used all her good names on dogs before she had kids, so she just used them again.

    boy: Zippy
    girl: Zappy

    ReplyDelete
  38. Or maybe Beyonce for a girl and Doctor for a boy.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Boys:
Jamin (Jaymen)and Elijah (shorten to Eli). Both are old boyfriends names so I won't be using them. Jace is what we named our son.
    Girls:
Emery, Ella, and Mia were the top three names we had picked out for my daughter. I knew we were going to name her Emery though. (after my grandfather) We didn't name her until after she was born. I had to let my husband think he was helping pick out the name.

  40. Girls - I always loved Oliva (Liv Lawson)

Boys - I always loved Anthony James (Tony Lawson!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. boy - gustav alexei levinski
    girl - virginia mariana levinksi

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sigmund (Levinski) for a boy.

    Velveeta (Levinski) for a girl.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I met someone that named their kid
    Tidus Trucker Bud Light
Dad's last name was Light and I think they were going to call him Bud.

    ReplyDelete
  44. In real life, I'd have to suggest Eberhardt. Or Waltraut. Good strong German names for a Polish immigrant (Levinski). In blogland, that's where it gets a little more difficult. You have to be very original with names like Hannah or Emma for a girl and Jonathan or Eric for a boy.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd go with Spock and Uhura. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I just skipped on over here from Vanessa's blog and am cracking up over your writing. And these suggestions for names are great!!
I don't have anything brilliant right now - not that can rival these gems anyhow, lol! Just wanted to say thanks for the laughs!

    ~ Mara

    ReplyDelete
  47. Pickles. Gender neutral, Pick for short.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Xandar if you have a boy, KD if you want one for both (then you can change what the initials stand for all their life and when you get mad at them you can just call out some random things like Kaden Danie or Kathryn Doormichael), Sariah if it's a gir (yeah then everyone will know where that one came from), or Kallie

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wowzer! Some of these are actually pretty cute names! Hmm, I would have to say:

    Girl: Olivia (Livi)
Boy: Mark or you could use the name that we MIGHT give our 37 week fetus, Maguire. A lot of people think it's weird, but we would call him Mac..and I'm ok with something different. Whatev! Good luck with the pregnancy!

    ReplyDelete
  50. How about Skinny Levinski....that is unisex!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh, total blog stalker entry:

Girl name: Le-a (It is pronounced "La dash ah" See? The dash ISN'T silent. Has a little ethnic flare that you might be looking for.

Boy name: Lemonjello (pronounced Luh-MON-juh-lo -- the accent is on the MON). Again, only guessing that you may be looking for some kind of flav-a-flave name.

  52. Blogger boy---little Sayid
    Blogger girl---Baby Peaches

    ReplyDelete
  53. Girl....Madigan (Nicknames...Maddie, Mads Maddie Loo Hoo)
    Boy...Kason (Nicknames... Kase, Kasey, KC)

Yes, these are serious names...these are the names we picked out when trying, unfortunately...we can't have children, so please use the names feel free, go ahead its okay, we'd be honored.

    ReplyDelete
  54. blog name... Robot
    (for boy or girl!)

    ReplyDelete
  55. For a boy or a girl, I like the name Avery (but mostly for a girl).

    ReplyDelete
  56. The above comment is funny, because my daughter Jennifer loves the name Avery for a girl. And it's a different Jennifer.

Here in Bangor, we have some real people with weird names. There's a man named Pencil Boone, and another guy on the radio named Yellow Light Breen. I hope you go with something a little less "out there". Like maybe Bone Crusher for a boy and Looney Tunes for a girl. Or Joanie and Chachi?

    ReplyDelete
  57. First...your mom's comments are way too funny and usually make me laugh. (October...still giggling)

Second...what ever you do name this little specimen please don't invent a new spelling OR invent a new name that no one can pronounce except for you and LeBron. And don't name a girl a boy's name or a boy a girl's name.
Case in point, if you want to name your little boy Jamal (goes well with Amir-Rasheed) don't spell it Jaymall. Or if you have a girl don't name her Max because it will confuse her and her future teachers. As for inventing new names, well you've been a Mormon long enough to know what I am talking about.

My vote: Josephine (girl) and for a boy, I think you should name him after your dad .

    ReplyDelete
  58. We used Pat on our baby blog. We kept the gender of our baby a surprise, and my dad suggested that we use Pat from It's Pat on SNL and then of course our baby blog was called Don't Pat the Belly, so it just kinda stuck in conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  59. For a girl - Pudin Pop

    For a boy - Bean

    ReplyDelete
  60. Boy- Asher

    Girl- Anya

(my favorite names that we can't use because they clash with our last name).

    ReplyDelete
  61. I was going to suggest Bun and/or Pickle but, astonishingly, I've been beaten to the punch. So can I be on the distinguished panel instead? (FYI, throughout my pregnancy I told people we were naming Gus "Ebeneezer Hasslehoff Thomas-Parker.")

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like the name Diana
(works for a boy or girl - no, really)

    ReplyDelete
  63. My husband is still holding out for our next child to be called Optimus Prime. Boy or Girl I don't really think he cares. He says its a name that automatically demands respect and/or instills fear in the hearts of those who hear it...and respect and/or fear are always a good thing...I guess. Anyway, if you want to call your little one Optimus, I won't be offended if you "steal it".

    ReplyDelete
  64. my two cents...
(although, i wish it was the $17 your sis got back at the grocery store)
girls-suzie, betsy (i have one of those), willa, nellie, molly, sally
boys-gus, sam, ed, ted, henry, harry, ned, pete (got one of those, too)
i like old dead people's names. but, whatev, it's your kid. :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I got very behind in blog reading and just dropped in - how excited I am to hear of your news!! Y'all deserve this blessing after all you've been through!! Congratulations!!
    My girl vote: Natasha
    My boy vote: Nathaniel (Nate)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jamie always says he wants to name a boy ChuckRogers- one word

    I like...

    for a girl: Lila
    for a boy: Cody

    ReplyDelete
  67. I missed the cutoff, didn't I? Too bad... because it came to me in a dream -- Shalimar. I think it works for girl or boy, but since we know it's a girl, sounds even better.
