Sometimes I wish I drank beer. Like today. I have this pork roast thing in the crock pot for tonight, and it just seems like a Pumpkinhead Ale would pair up with it quite beautifully.
The only other time I wish I drank beer is after long races. I think the moderate dehydration, plus the alcohol could make for a really good time. Or a quick trip to the ER--either way.
But I don't drink beer, and that's okay.
Other than that, I just a have a few things to catch you all up on:
1) Maggie licked our home phone (which is actually a cell phone), and now it doesn't work. My cell phone only works when it wants to, and between those two technological issues, I'm feeling very pioneer-esque.
2) I really kind of want a Garmin for my long runs and for when I do speed work. The 405 is too pricey, and the 305 is roughly the size of a brick--but a very well priced brick. Can someone offer up a strong opinion here? What to do, what to do?
3) I'm still winning the pizza contest.
4) I'm still hopelessly dependent on caffeine and I'm loving every minute of it.
5) Mindy is a marathoner!
6) Maggie untied the belt tie thing on my wrap dress yesterday while I was walking from the Chapel to the Mother's Lounge at church. Approximately seven people saw my goods. It was unexpectedly invigorating.
7) I signed up for a few cross country races, and in a moment of pure excitement I bounded up to the attic to dig out my fifteen year old racing spikes. I couldn't even begin to get them on guys--it was like trying to put a sock on a gallon of milk. Fatter ass, fatter feet, what's next? Let me just say, if my clavicles get fatter, I'm throwing in the towel. They're the best part of my body.
8) I know I have a super strict no WalMart policy (you can read about it here and here...and I'm promising you that I've adhered to it), but I'm determined to get my friend Kim to do a lap through WalMart and a lap through Target on our next long run.
9) I'm making a Julia Child recipe tonight, please bow down to my fanciness. But not too fast--I'm totally using Stove Top Stuffing. It's the best.
10) So really, Garmin thoughts? I'm chained to my treadmill on speed work days.

Hi Amy -
Long time lurker here. I was in Maine this weekend on vacation (about 20 miles from your town) and actually considered calling you, but then I thought- how creepy is that? Do people ever do that?
Anyway, back in Colorado today and loving my 305. Yep, it's bigger, but it does so much cool stuff I really don't care. And with the $ you save, you can get some new running pants.
see? win/win.
How awesome is running through Target and Walmart on a long run? I'm so jealous. I want to do that with you.
I got Brandon the 305, and he likes it, but it is bulky. I wore it on my 20 miler and spent most of the time trying to get it to stay in place on my little wrist. If you got the velcro band it might be okay. I'd get the 110 for myself if it wasn't so darn expensive... I don't need a lot of bells and whistles... which is pretty much why I use a $30 timex and street coordinates to figure out my distance and pace. ;) Good luck with the decision!
How about an iPhone with the Nike running app thing? Solves 2 problems. :)
I don't have a Garmin either so I'll be back to check out your comments to find out if I need one or not.
I am planning to sing up for a cross country race too! It's an 8k on a super difficult course (the last time I did it, a girl got hit by a deer!). I have been wondering if my old spikes still fit. I'll have to check if my parents still have them.
After years of pining for a GPS watch, I finally bought a Garmin 305 this summer and I love it. My wrist is about the size of a #2 pencil, so I thought the 305 would be bulky and uncomfortable but it's not at all.
I highly recommend it!
i got a 305 last year and LOVE it. true, a bit bulky, but adjustable. i bought it through amazon, but linked through this site: http://www.sportsscientists.com/ (scroll down on the right). killer deal. i run in the woods in VT, and have had no troubles with reception or gaps in the data.
gene
what about a garmin phone from Tmobile? it'll solve points #1 &2 for you..

I love my 305. Love it, love its price, love its functions. The 405 doesn't even do half of the stuff I want it to do.
My Nike running app (and the ipod sensor) just aren't that accurate. And I can estimate my pace just as accurately, so they seem like a waste to me. (Except when I upload them and see the cute little avatar I made for myself.)
I vote for the garmin 301...I've been rocking and running with one for years & I love it! It's pretty cheap & does great with distance/time/laps/calories/heart rate. The software isn't fancy, but lets you see lap times/paces, several weeks/months/folders at a time.

Stove Top is the best. I could eat that shiz by the box. By myself.
I love that you are now the flasher of your ward. It's good to be known for something. I was known as the 'fainter' in a previous ward. It's a fun story. Not as fun as flashing though.
I love my 305--I was very skeptical of the size but you get used to it quickly. I use the smaller strap that it comes with and have no issues with it being too big. Rumor has it the 405 doesn't do so well when it gets wet and isn't necessarily as accurate either...But those are just rumors...
LOVE my 305 - agree with everyone, a bit bulky, but totally doable. I have very skinny wrists, but I tighten it up and it doesn't bother me at all. LOVE all the capabilities, and I regularly upload my runs to the Garmin Connect website.
I have a friend who also has teeny tiny wrists to the point where the Garmin would knock against her bone, but she solved that by putting a wristband underneath it. Ya know, the Richard Simmons kind?? ;) Anyway, she puts the wristband on, then puts the Garmin over that and has no probs! Good luck!
I have the 405 and I love it, but I hear the 110 is paired down and waaaay less expensive?
I have the 305 and love it. It IS big but it's surprisingly lightweight. I really like it.
After reading this post I had to google two things - Garmin (does that make me less of a serious runner? probably, huh?), and clavicle (turns out it's my best feature, too!).
I guess that's my whole lot of nothing back at ya. Oh, and I'm so glad you're still winning the pizza thing. I kept looking at the answers on the pizza place's status to see if you had answered the question about which celebrity you'd want to have lunch with. So, who would it be?
How funny that your reaction to showing your goods was so much better than NieNie's. Then again, I guess she's not a kick-A marathon runner like you are. ;)
I'm a small boned person and have had not problems with the 305
bring back the Swatch in a festive color...you know you want to!
Try putting the phone in a plastic zip lock baggie with dry rice. That has worked for me when my phone got submerged in the lake, while in my pocket!
Have you checked ebay or craigslist for the Garmin?
I just want to know whats going on with seminary. I keep waiting for an awesome post about how amazing you are doing.
Hey Amy. Get the brick. You'll forget the size when you run. the readout is also larger, which means easier to read through sweat dripping into your eyes. lol
For me an added bonus is that it's so obvious when I finish a run and make a quick coffee stop, people KNOW I'm a serious runner, despite my deceiving size. :)
I also still have alllll my old racers (from college but i think I actually still have my asics harriers from HS awwws yeahss). One of these days Ill have a need to bust em out again...
