Sweet Relief

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox, who rolled over the Colorado Rockies in the 2007 World Series.

And congratulations to me, who accurately predicted that it would only take four games to stuff the National League's best ball-club into the proverbial recycling bin and send 'em to the processing plant.

Let me take a moment to recap some highlights of the series for all you non-baseball watchers who read this blog.

Highlights of Game 1, 2, 3 and 4:
The Rockies stunk, like ridiculously bad. Just a bunch of pansies wearing a strange shade of purple and some faux-sleeveless jerseys that were way cool in 1994--or whenever in the hell that team was established. -end of report-

There. I kept it short, as not to bore any non-sporting types.

Most of the time, when a team loses a big game, I feel a great deal of compassion for the fans. I can't help it, I'm a Red Sox fan and all Red Sox fans know the absolute heartbreak that comes along with losing. But last night was diferent. I felt no love for the Rockie's fans, not a single-little-friggin' ounce.

Why not? Because of HDTV, that's why not.

We watched game four at our friends' house. They don't have a rabbit ear antennae zip-tied to a coat hanger dangling from their living room window like we do--they have a plasma screen, and holy heck, that thing is awesome. Needless to say, we appreciated the invitation.

You could see individual blades of grass, the pitcher's facial stubble, and the one-day-old hats that that all the Rockies fans seemed to be sporting. The picture on their TV was so exceptional that it was easy to tell that 99% of the fans' t-shirts had never been through a spin cycle. We even saw two jackets with the tags still attached. I guess it's easier to return your newly purchased team gear after a loss if the bar code is still in tact.

Give me a freaking break. These people are not fans, they're nothing but a bunch of bandwagoning butt-heads. They're so new to the game that the Jumbotron said TOUCHDOWN after they hit a home run and no one even blinked. How's that for baseball fanatics?

So welcome aboard Rockie's fans. Welcome to the list of "fans" (and I use that term in the most casual sense of the word) that I really almost hate. It's you and the Yankees, and I'll caution you now-- Any old Yankees fan could knock your block off with one easy swing of her personalized brass knuckles. And really? I kind of wish they would.

GO SOX!

(sorry to be so harsh, I just can't help the way I feel)

Wow- even I'm not that harsh on the Rockies fans, Amy- every fan has to start somewhere! Their just in a different league (literally) than we are...

It is crazy though that people who are that newbie can score tix to the World Series... people here were paying 5K for a seat- you know they aren't new (just a little crazy... and rich. Very rich.).

Katy, I can't help it. Sure they have to start somewhere, but I bet they've already stopped, too.
Dude...and this is coming from the girl who fell asleep during game 4. Sure, you're pregnant, but whatev.

I don't know where these feelings are coming from.

It wasn't just the HDTV. We could see the Rockies fans yawning during the game and throwing themselves pity parties perfectly clear on the old school set!

I concur with your assessment of the series. There's only one thing I hate more than national league teams...NEW TEAMS. ok, wait, two things. NEW TEAMS and the CUBS. That might not make any sense, since the sCrUBS are in fact a national league team...but who says life has to make sense. Anyway, nice recap. Congrats to your beloved Red Sox.

I agree with your sentiments about the Rockies' fans, such as they are. People in Denver had no idea they had a baseball team until the playoffs, which is too bad because they've missed out on the first 15 years of a new franchise. As a guy without a team for the majority of my life (living in DC I REFUSE to cheer for the Blowrioles), I can say that having a hometown team is fantastic, regardless of how they play. It's a different kind of excitement to be there at the beginning of a franchise, but it's just as incredible as going to Fenway and feeling the baseball mythology that oozes out of that place.

It feels kind of anticlimatic... like the Rockies didn't even put up much of a fight. I would have liked to have it go seven games and be a nail-biter of a last game, but will take a Red Sox win any way that it happens. Still pretty amazing that they won the World Series AGAIN, without having to wait another 85 years! Woo-hoo!

yeah Red Sox!!! Now we can get some sleep! What a season! something about swinging towels doesn't do it for me personally.. I like the homemade signs. But then again maybe they were we surrender/crying towels.

It is too bad you just confirmed my earlier belief that members of "The Red Sox Nation" are even more insufferable than Yankees fans (and that is saying something).

Up until now I have been impressed, and very surprised with how gracious the Red Sox players (even that ogre Ortiz) and most of the fans have been .

No, the Rockies don't have a great storied tradition of the Red Sox but there really is no need to be so hateful!

If I were a betting man I would put put money on the Rockies winning more than two World Series in the next 89 years.

So here's to hoping for another long stretch of heartbreak for you all!

I've only recently started reading your blog, and so far I have loved it. But I have to stick up for the Rockies fans. I have been living in Denver for about 3 years, and in that time, I've been to see ~40 Rockies games. I own well-weathered Rockies gear and I actually knew we had a team all season long.

I agree that the WS was a bit anti-climactic... and I wish the Rockies had done better.

But it doesn't seem fair to hate the Rockies just because they're new (the Sox were new once, as well), and to call all Rockies fans bandwagon jumpers doesn't seem fair either.

As Sox fans, I thought you all knew something of the heartbreak that you feel when your team loses. Just because we're new doesn't mean it doesn't hurt us in the same way.

Amy, that wasn't me who left the snotty comment. Someone is hijacking my blog to be mean. I don't even like baseball and would never say anything mean about someone having a lot of cats (I have four after all).

Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous -- please take your negative energy somewhere else. This is AMY's blog and she can be as opinionated as she likes. Sheesh.

Anyway, Amy, GO RED SOX! :)

Way to stick up for our Sox Amy. Don't let the sore losers get you down.

Schnitz, I missed the drama.

The series was a bit of a let down considering how all we heard was how amazing the Rockies were. It is so much more fun to hate the Yankees - at least they are serious competition. Hope they don't bring A-Rod to Boston. We don't want him. CONGRATS TO THE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS - THE BOSTON RED SOX!!!!
