Close, But No Cigar: A Marathon Race Report

December 10, 2007

Every inch of my body is sore. I tried to touch my toes this morning, and I couldn't make it past my knees. Seriously you guys, it kind of hurts to type, so I'll keep it short and add more later. But here are a few highlights:

I ran a personal record in the marathon yesterday--3:48:44. I think it's about 8:43 per mile, but I'm not totally sure on that. If you want more details and stats, you can click here.

I missed qualifying for the Boston Marathon by 7 minutes and 45 seconds. I'm honestly fine with it. For some reason, I'd rather miss the mark by 8 minutes than by 2 or 3 minutes.

I was on pace for Boston until mile 16 or 17. I hit a major wall, had to take a potty break, and I wasn't able regain my pace until mile 21.5

I saw Jared and James three times during the race, I saw my friend Beth and her family once, and I saw the words "GO AMY" written across my friend Catherine's naked bum twice.

I ate a 3,000 calorie dinner last night. That was another personal record for me, and I'm feeling very, very accomplished.

I'll add some pictures and stories later...you know, when I can breath without it hurting. Thanks for all of the positive thoughts and well wishes yesterday!

I went over to Swiss after church yesterday and watched the runners. You were long gone but there were still quite a few going by at 12:30-ish. We live just one block off of Swiss. I am so impressed that you did this Amy and with such a great time! Congratulations! I saw such a variety of people going by yesterday... some even looked close to my age. Almost I am inspired to get in shape!

Congratulations on your marathon and a fantastic time! I know it wasn't the time you hoped for for Boston - but it is an amazing time regardless. I hope you enjoy another 3000 calorie day and take time to celebrate throughout the week - you earned it.

Awesome job Amy!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

What's the deal with the Canadian dude next to you? Hi, scary! LOL

Wicked good job, Sister Lawson! I am disappointed, though, that you weren't dressed in something a little ridiculous, like as a wise man. Surely you could have found a little sumpin' sumpin' in that costume box at Church.

That is very, very close to a BQ, and that, in and of itself, is a major accomplishment! Congrats on finishing the race, and finishing with such a great time! There will be more opportunities to qualify for Boston, if you choose.

Again, congrats!

Congratulations Amy!

You did great! I highly recommend drugs for the next couple days ... and more 3000 calorie meals.

I have no idea how to run anywhere near that fast... and I don't know how someone could physically run any faster (the winner finished when you were still at White Rock Lake???? wow.)

Congrats.

WOOO-HOOOO AMY!!! Congratulations on an awesome race! I think your time and pace are amazing. You finished a freaking MARATHON, woman! What an accomplishment! Lots of time to do a Boston in the next 50 years or so while you are living back in Maine.

wow Amy - that really is an incredible time. Congrats!!!

Pretty much the only reason to run marathons is for the 3000 calorie meals. enjoy :)

Holy crap, Amy! That's amazing! Even if you didn't BQ, your time is fast!

Great Job Amy! Congrats!

I think the Canadian on your left is crapping his pants.

WOW! Thats awesome!!! I am proud of you! PS you actually look really cute in your tight little spandex... and look very upbeat compared to my Canadian friend to your left....

I am suitably impressed. Then again, you'd still be a truly impressive human being even if you didn't run like the wind.

The best thing about the picture? The look of pure joy in your face.

Way to go, Amy!

I am de-lurking to say Congrats! Running a marathon is on my "list of things to do before I die" list. Your time was amazing ... I'll settle for finishing, tyvm LOL You look VERY happy in that picture! As some others have already said ... that Canadian guy to your left looks scary AND like he's crapping his pants.

Wow, that is fast. Does that say 6th in your age group? Great job Amy.

Amy said...

Thanks everyone!

Oh, and definitely not 6th in my age group...I think I was 36th :o)

Ok, and the Canadian guy next to me....yeah. whoa. I was next to him until mile 10. He was breathing like a hoover from the very first step. He was working pretty hard!

Mary--thanks for coming to Swiss! It would have been fun to see you!

Wow! That is absolutely amazing! Congratulations!!!!

I'm pretty sure I haven't run 26 miles in my entire life, so doing it in under 4 hours sounds like an incredible feat to me! Good job!

What's with the scary Canadian man? Eeek! And congrats on an awesome race!! :)

Michelle Glauser said...

I also noticed the scary dude in the picture. I loved your "breathing like a hoover" analogy. That would have been me!

Russ said...

great job...i'm sure there a lot of proud canadians out there today. i'm embarrassed to say that when i saw that picture of ugly canadian the first thing that crossed my mind was that he was somehow related to the serial killer in bc.

Any race you PR in is an awesome race! Congrats on an un-freaking-believable time. You earned every one of those 3000 calories. And, hey, as far as Boston goes, your soon-to-be-affluent-doctor-husband can always spend some of his soon-to-be-rolling-in affluence on a charity slot off of Ebay for you. LOL Pretty sure it won't have to come to that - with your kind of speed, a BQ is definitely in your future. Congrats again!
