A Very Recycled Valentine's Day

February 14, 2011

See this card?

Outside:

Inside:

It's two bears sleeping in bed. He's hot, she's cold--Jared and I could be those bears.

But that's not the interesting part. This is the interesting part...

I sh!t you not, I've been giving Jared this same, unsigned card every year for Valentine's Day since 2007. He's gotten this card in a crappy apartment in Texas, my parents' house in Massachusetts, and our house up here in Maine. Every year I hand it to him in the unsealed envelope and say, "Oh my word, isn't it perfect? Those bears might as well be us!"

He snickers, gives a little bouncy nod and goes, "Pfft! You're totally right."

Then he puts the card on the table, walks away to investigate something shiny/stinky/loud, and I slip the card back into the drawer of my sewing table....until next year.

You know, just my little contribution to saving the planet.

My grandmother/grandfather did that for most of their Valentine's together. I bet she still has the card, too.

I wonder if it would work the other way around? I think I will try that with my wife...the couch is pretty comfortable.

My mom totally does the same thing for my dad...I think she's been using the same card for at least 10 years. She would be proud. :)

ok, you were in my dream last night. I went to visit you in Maine and met you at your house with your (portly) Chinese husband and two daughters. Your family was on its way to eat at a restaurant and invited me to come along. At the restaurant I wasn't given a seat because all the seats were taken by your Asian family so I had to stand up at the head of the table. I was quite uncomfortable so I decided that I was going to drive around Maine. While leaving the restaurant I saw a gang of white boys...so I went straight to my van, then when I sat down the spirit told me to lock my door and right when I locked it one of those white gang members tried to open the door to rape me, but since I followed the prompting of the spirit he was, obviously, unsuccessful, so he flipped me off....and then after that it's fuzzy....I'm sure I drove around enjoying Maine...

I SO wish I'd thought of that! Guys don't dig cards. Even my fairly romantic Hubby read the card I gave him then threw it on the coffee table. If I can find it, I'm going to put it aside for next year.

That's great. Last year I bought a bunch of cards from a store that was going out of business. They were super cheap but really nice. I was so excited when I looked through the pile just before Valentine's Day to discover that I bought a husband and dad Valentine's day card. So I sgined them and put them on the counter for my husband to read when he woke up. After reading them he then told me that I gave him a Father's day card. Oh well, it's the sentiment that matters.

Last night as I was finally starting to doze off, I woke up fully laughing hysterically. I suddenly remembered this post. Gabe appreciated the story, but not the sudden wake-up.

So funny! I saw this EXACT card at a local store yesterday and promptly purchased it. It fits us as well.

I found it at Fred Meyer--in Wasilla Alaska. Ha! Would you like me to send you one? :)
